Varun Gandhi may have rushed to clarify that his comment on Amethi’s self help groups was not meant to be an ‘endorsement’ of any political party or candidate, his mother Maneka has not taken very kindly to the incident.
“I have told Varun not to comment on anything he hasn’t seen for himself. What Varun has said is wrong,” Maneka told reporters on Wednesday.
“I have myself gone to Amethi and there is no development there. Nobody should comment on something unless you have seen it with your own eyes. Some people might have told him that good work has been done in Amethi,” she added.

The embarrassing slap down of the 34-year-old Varun Gandhi could well be intended to do some damage control inside the BJP, whose leaders understandably, would not have taken very kindly to the incident.
Maneka Gandhi said Varun had told her that “people asked him to say this.”
Varun Gandhi has perhaps wisely decided not to comment on his mother’s comments.
The timing of the comment by Varun was especially bad for the BJP, given that it had just announced that Smriti Irani, the actress turned politician would be competing against the Congress vice president.
Often called the ‘Sushma Swaraj’ of Modi’s campaign, she is seen as being very close to the Prime Ministerial candidate.
Be as it may, the endorsement – intentional or otherwise – was welcomed by Rahul, who is facing quite an unprecedented fight for the seat. In addition to Irani, he is also up against the garrulous Kumar Vishwas who has been challenging him on multiple counts, including challenging him to name all the blocks in Amethi.
“Whatever Varun is saying is right,” Rahul Gandhi said in Rae Bareli yesterday. “I am very happy that other people are appreciating the work in Amethi”. This was of course, before the Amethi SDM rejected his residency proof, saying that he was ‘not even an occasional resident of Amethi”.
