PUCL alleges rights violation during arrest of IM suspects

Summary

The PUCL said following a detailed investigation by a seven-member team and independent activists, it has concluded that “serious human rights violations committed by all the three police forces.”

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties in its fact-finding report on the arrests of suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives in Rajasthan has alleged gross human rights violations and also questioned the timing for such a move pointing out that they were picked up days before parliamentary elections.

Thirteen youths were arrested by Delhi and Rajasthan police in March — six from Sikar, five from Jodhpur, two from Jaipur. Three of them —Maroof and Waqar Azhar from Jaipur, and Mohammed Shakib from Jodhpur — are currently in the custody of Delhi police.

The team also alleged several illegal detentions, including that of Mehrajuddin and Amaar, the roommates of Waqar Azhar, Barkat Ali’s father Liaqat Ali and two brothers in Jodhpur. The detention of Mehrajuddin led to his suspension from college. “The arrestees were all treated with indignity.

Shakib’s entire family was taken into custody, including the women, and there were no policewomen. Similarly, Iqbal’s (Jodhpur) family members, including children, were beaten up,” said Kavita Srivastava, general secretary of the PUCL.
