An otherwise free-spirited girl Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt), daughter of a rich businessman, gets claustrophobic with all her relatives gearing her up for her marriage. Fed up with the suffocating environment, she calls her fiance in the middle of the night and much against his will insists on going for a drive towards the highway. Their drive goes horribly wrong and leaves Veera in the hands of a goon Mahabir Bhatti (Randeep Hooda) who kidnaps her. On learning her privileged background he keeps her at ransom and takes her along state to state only to realize life has something else in stores for him as he finds Veera enjoying her freedom whilst with him.
It’s after Socha Na Tha that Imtiaz Ali brings about an infectious innocence in his film that instantly strikes a chord with the audience. The movie starts at a languid pace and keeps to it right till the end but doesn’t give you a chance to complain for it takes you along with its journey making you feel for the characters, their joy, inhibitions, pathos et al. Imtiaz Ali who’s had a strong hand at capturing emotions of the Gen-X once again taps the young minds and tackles their concerns with utmost sensitivity.
One of the strongest points in the film is casting. The director almost nails the casting by roping in Alia Bhatt who gives a startling performance. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the movie thrives on her young yet strong shoulders as she delivers one flawless sequence after the other. There couldn’t be another actor than Randeep Hooda to complement her well. The man who is listed amongst one of the hottest men of India easily slips into the unkempt goon’s role and is spot on in the mannerisms, accent etc. There’s ample soul in the chemistry between the two and you literally feel for the character.
The movie does get melodramatic towards the second half with the layers of Mahabir’s character peeling off but it’s the actors’ histrionics that keep your interest in the film going.
This review is not complete without the soulful music by AR Rahman that adds richness to the picturesque landscape and the breathtaking cinematography of the scenic Himachal.
To sum it up, Highway is tantalizingly delicious and a journey you would want to embark on. Must watch.

Sydney: G20 host Australia on Saturday urged better advance notice of policy changes by central banks to avoid shockwaves for emerging economies at a meeting of finance ministers where rifts over US monetary policy loomed large.
Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey said he wants the summit to stay focused on ways to stimulate growth and create jobs in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, adding he was confident of tangible results.
“I must say there is tremendous goodwill in all the meetings I have attended,” he told reporters before Saturday`s meetings began.
But the fallout being felt by emerging economies, which have suffered sharp capital outflows and losses to their currencies as a by-product of the Federal Reserve easing back its mammoth stimulus programme, remains a lightning rod issue.
Countries led by Indonesia and South Africa, which is not attending the Sydney meeting along with Mexico and Brazil, have called on the US to provide more clarity on its wind-back and better communication to subdue the impacts on emerging markets.
US Treasury chief Jacob Lew said the US had to act in its own best interests.
“My focus as US treasury secretary has to be on the core strength of the US economy and I think the world economy does better when the US economy is doing well,” he was cited as saying Friday by the Australian Financial Review.But Hockey called for a policy of “no surprises”, saying central banks in the world`s most advanced nations should give each other better notice of policy changes to avoid market turbulence.
“I think if there is a policy of no surprises in relation to monetary policy activity and that central banks around the world have reasonable warning of what may be events that create market volatility, I think that`s not unreasonable,” he said, voicing support for emerging markets.
“I think that`s what central bank governors are aiming for.”
Bilateral meetings were held Saturday morning ahead of a session on the global economy in which delegates were to discuss the latest reports from the OECD, IMF and World Bank.
The OECD warned Friday that declining global productivity would usher in a new and extended era of low growth unless reforms are accelerated.
These include freeing up labour markets, encouraging infrastructure investment and undertaking the structural reforms needed to boost domestic demand.
Hockey has been pushing his fellow ministers to agree to faster global growth targets and a draft of the communique due to be issued Sunday cited by Bloomberg said they would agree on “concrete measures” to achieve this.
It said collective gross domestic product could be raised by “at least two percent” above current projections over the next five years, although this could not be confirmed.
OECD data released Thursday showed growth in advanced economies slowed down slightly in 2013 to 1.3 percent from 1.5 percent in 2012.
Hockey said he was confident the meeting would provide results with “a general mood of intention to deliver real outcomes”.
“All the finance ministers and central bank governors I have spoken to understand that whilst the globe is facing some challenges, that there is some level of international market volatility,” he said.
“Through greater cooperation, realistic goals, and importantly a tangible process for achieving those goals, we can have very real outcomes this weekend.”
But he admitted that some of his counterparts — notably Germany — were reluctant to put their names to a global economic growth target.
“I understand that there is some reluctance from some to have a goal or a target or an ambition, but we need to reach high to deliver more,” he said.
“There needs to be a tangible plan presented by each jurisdiction that helps to achieve our collective goal. “

New Delhi: A day after former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal trained his guns on Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the AAP leader will shoot off a letter to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, asking him to break his silence on the gas pricing issue involving Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani.
Raising the poll pitch ahead of the crucial General Elections, Kejriwal on Friday sent a letter to Modi, asking him to break his silence on the gas pricing issue.
The AAP chief held a press conference yesterday and claimed that the Congress-led government at the Centre has colluded with the top industrialist to raise gas prices. The AAP chief said that the government has given undue favours to Reliance Industries.
Kejriwal said, “To Rahul, we would say the decision (of increasing the gas price) was taken by the government which is known to run by his family. We want him to speak on the issue,” he said.
The activist-turned politician also said that the BJP leader and the Congress vice president should publicly disclose who owns the helicopters, which they use for travelling across the country. He also asked both the leaders to come clear on the payment made for the choppers used for their respective rallies.
“Helicopters and private jets are being used whenever you and Rahul Gandhi travel within the country and abroad. As per the news reports, the aircraft services you and Rahul Gandhi use are free of cost. Spending in your election rallies are worth crores of rupees. Some people say Mukesh Ambani funds you. Is that true?” he said.
Attacking the BJP’s PM candidate over the issue of black money, Kejriwal cited media reports, which allege that Ambani himself has black money stashed in Swiss banks. The AAP leader asked whether Modi, who aspires to become the prime minister, would act against Ambani if he attains the top post.
Kejriwal said reports have been doing rounds that the incumbent UPA government is being run by the RIL chairman. “If Modi becomes the PM, will Mukesh Ambani continue to run his government?” the AAP leader asked.
Trying to corner Modi, the AAP leader also raised the issue of Parimal Nathwani. He asked the Gujarat CM to clarify how Nathwani, who is the group president of Reliance, was elected to Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket.
He also asked Congress and the BJP to explain why they opposed the filing of FIR by Delhi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against Ambani.
“Do they have such a strong bonding with Mukesh Ambani?”
Kejriwal concluded by saying, “AAP will circulate 10 crore copies of this letter across the country.”

The figure brings to 35,142 the total number of CAR refugees who have fled to Cameroon since March 2013, Xinhua quoted the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as saying.
The conflict in the CAR broke out when mainly Muslim Seleka rebels launched attacks in December 2012, and has taken on increasingly sectarian overtones as mainly Christian militias known as anti-Balaka have taken up arms.
The crisis has already claimed thousands of lives, uprooted almost one million people and left more than 2.5 million people in need of immediate humanitarian assistance.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other senior UN officials have called for increased international efforts to end the killing and alleviate the suffering of the people of the CAR.
On Thursday, Ban put forward a six-point initiative for addressing the most urgent priorities and needs, including more troops and police and funding for humanitarian assistance.
“We must step up our efforts,” he told reporters after briefing the Security Council. “The international community is working hard to protect people from atrocities, restore stability and provide emergency relief, but it is simply not enough.”
The UNHCR said the growing number of new arrivals in Cameroon and their need for food and other basic necessities have resulted in higher prices and shortage of goods on the local markets.
Before the current crisis, Cameroon was hosting 92,000 refugees from the CAR. The first started to arrive in 2006 to escape from rebel groups and bandits in the north of their country.

“India is a very important member” of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia established in January 2009, Donna Hopkins, counter piracy and maritime security coordinator at the State Department told foreign media on Friday.
Since then, the Contact Group has grown to an open and vital architecture of 80 nations and organisations, including the entire spectrum of stakeholders, she said in a briefing on counter piracy with François Rivasseau, deputy head of the European Union delegation to the US.
The US has just handed over the chairmanship of the contact group to the European Union.
“There is almost no littoral country, no naval country, and no major shipping country that has not contributed actively to the Contact Group,” Hopkins said describing Russia and China as “two very important actors.”
“The figures speak for themselves,” she said noting, “There has been no piracy hijacking off the coast of Somalia since May 10, 2012, over 20 months.”
“This is the lowest rate of attempted hijackings in over six years and certainly since the peak of the crisis in 2011,” Hopkins said.
“No ships are currently held hostage by Somali pirates, although there remain at least 49 hostages whom the international community are working to free.”
Over 1,400 pirates and suspected pirates are in courts or in prisons in 21 countries with the largest number held in India.
“However, there is still much work to be done,” Hopkins said. “The fundamental conditions along the Somali coast have not changed, and if we drop our guard, piracy will return.”
There are three organised multilateral counter-piracy missions: the EU’s NAVFOR Atalanta, NATO’s Operation Ocean Shield, and Combined Maritime Forces Combined Task Force 151.
Then there are a number of independent deployers, including China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea, she said.
The operational commanders of all of these counter-piracy forces meet quarterly in Bahrain on a voluntary and nonpolitical basis to discuss their respective plans and de-conflict their operations.
“This is a remarkable success. It works very well,” Hopkins said. “So piracy is a great uniter because it’s a common enemy. Everybody hates pirates.”
Hopkins said there are 22 to 30 military ships of different nationalities at any given time from “The whole world — And China and Russia and India.”

South Sudan’s army and rebels have traded accusations over new atrocities reported to have been committed during heavy fighting in Malakal, in defiance of a ceasefire signed in neighbouring Ethiopia on January 23.
A UNMISS patrol that visited Malakal on Thursday spoke with eyewitnesses who indicated that “armed opposition forces targeted and killed 10 unarmed civilians at the Malakal Teaching Hospital on the basis of their ethnic background” Wednesday, a UN statement said.
The unrest in South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, has left thousands dead and displaced close to 900,000 people, including tens of thousands who have crammed into UN bases in fear of ethnic attacks by either President Salva Kiir’s Dinka tribe or his former vice president Riek Machar’s Nuer tribe.
The conflict between troops loyal to Kiir and rebels backing Machar broke out in the capital Juba on December 15 amid tensions within the ruling party, but quickly spread across the country.
UNMISS staff also reported witnessing the extrajudicial killing of two children just outside the mission’s compound. The gunmen were believed to be youths allied with armed rebels.
“It is clear that civilians bore the brunt of much of the fighting and that gross violations of human rights were committed,” the UN statement said. An interim report drafted by the mission and handed to the UN Security Council details alleged human rights abuses committed by both sides between December 15 and late January. A final report is due in April.
“Large numbers of civilians were deliberately targeted and killed along ethnic lines and many more were displaced for similar reasons,” the UN statement said, citing the interim report.
It points to Nuer killed by Sudan People’s Liberation Army soldiers in Juba in the first three days of the conflict and Dinka killed in Malakal by young Nuer and deserters who left the national security forces.
UNMISS said it was investigating possible mass graves in Juba, Bentiu and Rubkona.
Sources reported the “deliberate targeting of civilians, both nationals and foreigners, in extrajudicial and other unlawful killings, including mass killings, enforced disappearances, gender-based violence such as rapes and gang-rapes and instances of ill treatment and torture by forces from both sides of the conflict,” the UN statement said.

Moody`s raised Spain`s sovereign credit rating by one notch Friday, citing progress in reforms to put the economy on a more sustainable track.
Moody`s Investors Service upgraded the rating to Baa2 from Baa3, and gave the country a “positive outlook”, suggesting the potential of a further upgrade.
Spain has made faster-than-expected progress in rebalancing the economy away from real-estate investment, where a 2008 price bubble crash sent the economy reeling, towards exports, the ratings firm said.
Moody`s highlighted the authorities` progress in implementing broad structural reforms, especially in the labor market and the public pension system, as well as other measures including the restructuring of the Spanish banking system.
“These efforts support Moody`s expectation of stronger, more sustainable economic growth over the medium term and continued improvements in the resilience of government finances.”

He said people were now saying the ordinance route be taken to bring in these anti-graft measures and he had talked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in this regard.
“Let us see if the ordinance can be brought or not. But in a way, the opposition deceived. Opposition ka dhokha hai,” Gandhi said.
The Congress Vice President said he had said several times that that action is more important than words and the reality was that the opposition did not extend support when it was time to act to bring anti corruption measures.
“I thought the people in the opposition will support these Bills and India will get a strong anti-graft mechanism. But they didn’t do so,” Gandhi said.

Different sources close to the talks at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said China, Iran and Russia wanted flexibility over the timetable, but the United States and the European Union insisted on being strict.
So far, just 11 percent of Syria’s 1,200 tonnes of dangerous chemicals have been taken out of the country.
The US rejected a Damascus request for a 100-day extension to an end-May deadline for it to ship out the totality of its chemical arms, according to one source.
“The Syrian government continues to put its energy into excuses, instead of actions,” said the US representative in the OPCW, Robert Mikulak. The anti-proliferation chief in Britain’s foreign office, Philip Hall, said: “Two weeks on, there has been no substantial progress in removing chemicals from Syria.
“Our concern is growing that the 30 June deadline for the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons will not be met. Syria’s commitment to that date is in question.”
Under an agreement brokered by Russia and the US last year, all of Syria’s chemical weapons were to be destroyed by June 30 this year.
Damascus signed on to the deal to avert US military strikes in the wake of deadly chemical attacks outside Damascus blamed by the West on President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The plan calls for the chemicals to be taken from Syria’s main port Latakia by Western warships to a US vessel which will break them down using hydrolysis, a process expected to take 90 days.
But Western diplomats in the OPCW last month expressed frustration at repeated delays to the process, and the UN Security Council on February 6 called on Syria to move faster.
Syria has said it does not have the right material to transport the chemicals and that it has been hampered by the security situation in the war-torn country.
The OPCW’s executive council will meet again on Tuesday, and a formal meeting will be held early March to continue discussion.

New Delhi: US operator Verizon Wireless has completed USD 130 billion deal by buying 45 percent stake in its wireless division from Vodafone Group PLC.
Vodafone shareholders will be paid the equivalent of USD 0.49 for each existing ordinary share in addition to a distribution of Verizon shares.
Vodafone investor would receive proceeds of 72 pence in Verizon shares and 30 pence in cash for each share owned.
Shareholders of both the companies had approved the transaction last month.
Verizon, which also competes with cable operators for video and internet customers, had recently agreed to buy Internet TV technology from chip maker Intel but did not disclose the deal terms.
It plans to use Intel’s technology to improve search and discovery features for Verizon’s wireline FiOS video service and to help it build a platform to deliver video to mobile devices, Shammo told analysts on the company’s conference call.

New Delhi: In retaliation over the trial of two Italian marines in India, a live bullet and hate mails were dropped in the mailbox of Indian embassy in Rome on Friday, a foreign ministry source said.
Calling the incident a matter of grave concern, Indian mission has asked Italy to beef up security around the embassy. “We have escalated the matter to the Italy authorities and hope that necessary steps would be taken on this issue soon,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.
A couple of days back, the Italian government had summoned the Indian ambassador to discuss concerns over the delay in court proceedings against the two marines in New Delhi which has heightened tensions between the two nations.
Akbaruddin also said that talks are going on to resolve the matter between the two countries.
The Supreme Court, earlier in the week, had asked the Centre to file an affidavit on its final decision on contentious anti-piracy charges against two Italian marines, arrested for allegedly killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast two years ago.
Italy has strongly protested against India over slapping the provisions of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf (SUA) Act against the marines, asserting that these provisions are slapped against pirates and its marines are not pirates.

“Nine attackers including two suicide bombers were killed when they tried to force their way into the presidential palace,” Xinhua quoted Minister for National Security Abdelkarim Hussein Guled as saying.
Three were killed on the government side, including two officials and a soldier, he added.
A car bomb went off outside the gate of the presidential palace before a group of al Shabaab fighters tried to storm the building.
The attack was aimed to cause maximum damage but was foiled by local troops and African Union peacekeepers, the minister said.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, who was at the presidential palace at the time of the attack was unharmed and condemned the attack by terming it as “an act of terrorism”.
“An act of terrorism, however unspeakable, does not hide the truth that this is a marginal group on the brink of extinction,” the president said. “The military campaign we are fighting with brave Somali and AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) soldiers will eliminate our enemies.”
The attack on the presidential palace drew global condemnation.
UN Somalia envoy Nicholas Kay condemned the assault on the Somali presidency as “another desperate and criminal act” which “does nothing but harm to the people of Somalia”.
“The UN and the international community remain steadfast in their determination to see a new Somalia rise, and continue to support Somalia in its quest to stabilise and rebuild institutions,” Kay added.
Head of the African Union Somalia mission (AMISOM) Mahamat Saleh Annadif condemned the attack on the presidential Palace as “cowardly”.
“I commend the actions of the brave security forces who fought off the attackers, hell-bent on shedding the blood of innocent Somalis. The attack was against the Somali people, their institutions and their religion,” Annadif said.

But he seems to have liked the director’s “Highway” a lot more.

Twelve people were killed in the attack by militant group Al-Shabaab on the presidential palace known as Villa Somalia, which is also the seat of the Somali government in Mogadishu, Xinhua reported.
In a statement issued here by his spokesperson, Ban expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured in the attack.
He also paid tribute to the Somali National Forces and the African Union Mission in Somalia for their “efficient and professional response” in repelling the attackers.
“The secretary-general is concerned that the recent attacks perpetrated by Al-Shabaab insurgents in Somalia are clearly aimed at destabilizing the country at a time when many efforts are being mobilized to restore peace and development,” said the statement.
The UN chief called on the Somali people and government to remain resolute in the fight against extremism. “He reiterates the United Nations’ unwavering support for their determined efforts to build a peaceful and stable Somalia,” it added.
