Family, party back me, Adarsh a non-issue: Chavan rebuts Modi

Nanded (Mah): Hitting back at Narendra Modi, former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan said his party wanted him to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Nanded due to the anti-incumbency factor and that his family including sitting MP and brother-in-law Bhaskarrao Patil was firmly behind him.

“They (my family) are with me (for campaigning). I was surprised over his (Modi’s) remarks. The sitting MP from here himself said he does not want to contest (the polls). Party took the decision considering the anti-incumbency factor,” Chavan told select journalists at his residence in Nanded.

“I was consulted by the party high-command before taking the decision (on giving the ticket),” he stated.

The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, in a rally in Nanded on Sunday had teared into Congress’s decision to field Chavan, who is an accused in the Adarsh housing scam, and also alleged that he “snatched” the Nanded Lok Sabha seat from his brother-in-law.

“Does anybody snatch away the right of a sister. One should instead give something to the sister and should not loot her,” Modi had said.

Rebutting Modi’s remarks, Chavan said, “I am accompanied by my wife, sister and even by my brother-in-law. My family campaigns for me. Which member from his (Modi’s) family campaigns for him?”.

Chavan also slammed the allegations levelled against him in the Adarsh scam and blamed the media for deliberately creating a perception on the issue.

“Unfortunately, things have gone to a low level. Deliberately, a perception is created by the media. Some (media persons) are hand in glove with some politicians who cannot win (the elections). Things have gone to a micro-level. Accidents cannot be called as malafide intentions. One has been branded as a criminal,” he said.

He also took on the BJP for the coffins scam and said “It was one of the biggest scams… it took place during the NDA’s regime.”

Chavan said the Adarsh scam would not hamper his poll prospects.

“It (Adarsh) is not an issue. What are you talking about Kargil… the Justice J A Patil commission report on the scam has made crucial findings and one of them is that the land belonged to the state government and not to the Centre. The Opposition will not be able to score on the issue,” he said.

Unfazed over the show of strength by the BJP in the ‘Mahayuti’ rally addressed by Modi, which saw the attendance of approximately one lakh people, Chavan said, “If not here, then where else would he go. We were expecting him (here). I don’t feel any threat from the rally.”

“I don’t see Modi wave anywhere in Maharashtra,” he said.

To a query that Congress has paved way for his rehabilitation by giving him the Lok Sabha ticket, he said, “My personal rehabilitation is not an issue. Our aim is to win. I was much comfortable in the state (affairs). My priority is my party.”

On silence maintained by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on party’s decision to field him from Nanded seat, Chavan asked, “Why is there a need for anybody to talk when the central leadership has taken the decision?”.

On alleged discontent within the party over the Nanded issue, Chavan, without taking names, said that some “disgruntled internal elements” have been snowballing this issue again and again and are trying to eliminate him politically. “I will speak on it elaborately after the elections,” he said.

Bappi Lahiri fights clean, hopes to get to Lok Sabha on a song

Lahiri is hoping to capitalise on the support for Modi. AFP

Kolkata: Singing some of his hit numbers like ‘Ooh la la la’ and ‘I am a disco dancer’ in his poll campaign, Bappi Lahiri is using his music to seek votes as a BJP candidate.

As he moves around the streets of the Serampore Lok Sabha constituency, 22 km away from Kolkata, Bollywood’s ‘Disco King’ Bappi ‘da’ breaks into a song every now and then while interacting with voters in his constituency.

The 61-year-old doesn’t mind shaking a leg too to woo star-struck voters who have never seen a Bollywood personality visiting their neighbourhood.

Lahiri is hoping to capitalise on the support for Modi. AFP

“My songs have kept me alive and kicking in Bollywood for so many years. I am not a retired musician. Even my new songs are a big hit. I can do anything with my songs and this time I want the lotus (BJP’s poll symbol) to bloom with my music,” Lahiri told PTI here.

The man who pioneered the use of disco music in Indian cinema with an Indian flavour is best known for his songs like ‘Koi Yahan Nache Nache’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘Zubi Zubi’, ‘Jee Le Le’, ‘Bambai Se Aaya mera Dost’, ‘Raat Baaki’, ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’ and ‘Chalte Chalte’.

A first-timer in politics, he has made it a point to never attack the Congress or the CPI(M), nor the Trinamool Congress in election meetings.

“I will not say any thing about others. I respect everyone,” is his reply when asked about sitting Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee.

He is even praise for Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee, saying everything is good in West Bengal under her chief ministership.

“I am not fighting at the state level. This is for the Centre. I want to go to Parliament and fight for the people of Bengal from Delhi,” says Lahiri, who has composed music for many evergreen numbers and lent his voice to many soulful songs.

With his trademark gold locket of Lord Ganesha dangling from his chest, he talks about the Narendra Modi “magic”.

“I came into politics to support him because like Modi I also want to serve the people. I could have got a Rajya Sabha ticket anytime but I opted for the Lok Sabha because I want to connect with people,” he says.

When asked how he plans to handle the mud-slinging common during election season between contestants, he says he will steer clear of replying to any adverse comments.

“I want a clean and healthy fight. If someone says anything against me now then the people will give them the answer during voting,” he states.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls in his constituency, the BJP candidate had managed to secure only 3.56 per cent votes and lost his security deposit while the Trinamool candidate and sitting MP Kalyan Banerjee, won with 52.68 per cent votes.

The statistics doesn’t scare the musician as he retorts saying, “Only God can defeat me. No man or party can defeat me”.

To the people of Serampore, he has promised to built a Bappi Lahiri Music Academy and also bring the former Danish colony into the national tourist map.

Serampore was a Danish colony between 1755 and 1845 and has many structures constructed in the neo-classical architectural style. Due to lack of restoration and marketing efforts, the river town has not become a a tourist hub.

“I also want to work for the welfare of jute mill workers as it has a labour-belt,” he says.

Mumbai’s public bus service went off the roads today as hundreds of bus conductors and drivers went on mass casual leave to protest a new scheduling software that they claimed would increase their workload.

Commuters had to contend with the complete absence of the familiar red the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses on Mumbai’s roads and make alternate arrangements.

A union representing the bus drivers and conductors said that employees had gone on mass casual leave to protest against the implementation of a new scheduling system.

A report said that the new scheduling software from Trapeze, a Canadian firm engaged by BEST to reduce its losses and the utility service claimed that it was expected to save them Rs 32 crore.

“The scheduling and route of a bus is presently fixed manually at each of the 26 depots in the city. With the new software this would be done automatically,” a spokesperson for the union told Firstpost.

The union claims that the new software will increase their duty hours to 12 to 15 hours a day and reduce their rest period, he said.

They also claimed that the new software could allocate routes to bus drivers and conductors that they may not be aware of, the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for the BEST said that the union had earlier gone to the Bombay High Court and it was referred to an industrial court which had given the go ahead to the new scheduling software.

BEST is still awaiting a copy of the final order, he said

He said that most of the bus conductors and drivers were on leave.

“We will call a meeting with the trade union and will attempt to reach a solution within a couple of hours,” the spokesperson said.

Mumbai residents took to Twitter to share the news and some claimed that it was difficult to get rickshaws and taxis. Here are some tweets:

Suniel Shetty to pay Rs 20, 000 for non-appearance, court may issue warrant

Suniel Shetty A warrant against Suniel Shetty may be issued if he did not mark his presence next week in the defamation suit.

Summary

A warrant against Suniel Shetty may be issued if he did not mark his presence next week in the defamation suit.

A Delhi court slapped Rs 20,000 as costs on Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty for his failure to appear before it and warned him that it would issue a warrant against him if he did not mark his presence next week in a defamation suit filed against him by a stuntman.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Savitri allowed the plea of 52-year-old Shetty for exemption from personal appearance and gave him a last opportunity to appear before her without any fail on next date of hearing.

“A cost of Rs 20,000 is imposed on Suniel Shetty for his failure to appear in the court. He is directed to appear on the next date without any fail,” the CMM said, adding that it will not consider any request next time.

In the morning, Shetty’s counsel submitted before the court that he will appear before it after the lunch recess but when the matter was taken up for hearing later in the day, the court was told that the actor would not be able to appear as he had fallen ill due to food poisoning and returned from Pune airport yesterday.

The exemption plea was opposed by advocate Ravinder Kumar, appearing for complainant Puran Chauhan, saying the actor has been delaying the case and his request should not be allowed.

The court had earlier also imposed a “cost of Rs 20,000″ on Shetty while allowing his exemption plea considering his “status”.

However, Shetty’s advocate Vinit Dhanda, against whom the court had earlier imposed a “cost of Rs 2,000″ for failing to appear before it, was present during the day’s hearing.

The court had fixed today for hearing of the bail pleas of the actor and his lawyer and also for “framing of notice”.

It was hearing the defamation case filed in October 2013 against Shetty and Dhanda by Delhi-based stuntman Chauhan, who has alleged that they had made false statements before the Delhi High Court and the media that he had beaten one of them and an FIR was lodged against him.

Chauhan claimed that with the help of his false statement in 2011, Shetty had managed to obtain stay from the high court on summons issued for him to appear in a case in which the actor was accused of not paying him nearly Rs one crore.

According to Chauhan, Shetty had told the high court that on March 2011, his lawyer was beaten by the complainant inside a washroom in the court building.

According to the complainant, Shetty had also told media persons outside the court that an FIR had been lodged against Chauhan and that he would be arrested soon. Chauhan has said no such beating incident had taken place.

He has said that through an RTI reply from the police headquarters, he came to know that no FIR was lodged against him and no PCR call was made at continued…

Bhullar to Santhan: Beneficiaries of SC ruling on death penalty

The SC stand on the death penalty has been widely welcomed: Reuters

The Supreme Court today commuted the death sentence of 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar to life imprisonment after the Centre had also backed the reduction of his sentence.

“Due to an inordinate delay for eight years, the Supreme Court said death could not be awarded to Bhullar,” Bhullar’s lawyer KTS Tulsi told reporters outside the apex court.

Bhullar is the latest death row convict to benefit from a recent Supreme Court ruling that “undue, inordinate and unreasonable delay in execution of death sentence [amounts to] torture” and was a ground for commutation of sentence.

The SC stand on the death penalty has been widely welcomed: Reuters

Quoting extensively from international treaties and standards, the court stated that the execution of people suffering from mental illness would be unconstitutional. It ruled that “insanity” or mental illness would be a factor that warranted commutation of a death sentence. The Court also reiterated that solitary confinement of a prisoner on death row was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court also laid down guidelines on the treatment of people under sentence of death, in a move that could end the trend towards secrecy in executions in 2012 and 2013.

According to the guidelines, prisoners on death row should receive legal aid, be informed about the rejection of their mercy petitions and in writing, have their mental and physical conditions regularly checked and be allowed to meet their family members before execution, which should not happen before two weeks from the communication of the rejection of the mercy petition.

Here is a list of all the death row convicts who have seen their sentences commuted in the aftermath of this ruling:

Devinderpal Singh Bhullar (Bomb blast in Delhi)

An engineering teacher by profession, Bhullar taught in Ludhiana before his conviction for a bomb blast in Delhi.

He was declared guilty (under India’s Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) of killing nine bystanders in a 1993 car bombing intended to kill politician Maninderjeet Singh Bitta, and sentenced to death by hanging by a split decision.

The bench had on 31 January stayed Bhullar’s execution and had agreed to review its judgement by which it had rejected the 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict’s plea to commute his death sentence to life.

It had issued notice to the Centre and Delhi government on a curative petition and had also directed IHBAS, where Bhullar is being treated, to file a medical report on the condition of the death row convict who is alleged to be suffering from mental illness.

The plea of Bhullar’s wife for the commutation of his death sentence assumes significance in view of the apex court’s 21 January verdict holding that inordinate and inexplicable delay by the government in deciding mercy pleas of death row convicts can be a ground for commuting their sentence. Bhullar’s wife filed the petition against the apex court verdict which rejected her plea to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment on grounds of delay on the part of the government in deciding his mercy plea.

Santhan alias T. Suthenthiraraja: (Rajiv Gandhi assassination)

A Sri Lankan national in his twenties at the time of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, Santhan was allegedly a member of the intelligence wing of the LTTE and was close to the prime accused Sivarasan.

He was sent to Madras to continue his studies and after coming to India, studied in the Madras Institute of Engineering Technology, where his fees were allegedly paid by the LTTE.

Santhan was allegedly a crucial cog in the planning of the assassination and was one of the few conspirators who was informed early on about the fact that their target was Rajiv Gandhi. He had also met with Sivarasan on the day of the assassination and seen him off.

Murugan (Rajiv Gandhi assassination)

Twenty one years old at the time of the incident, Murugan was a part of the LTTE in Sri Lanka and was allegedly sent to India to carry out the assassination. In a confession given to the police, Murugan admitted that he was a part of the ‘suicide squad’ and had come to India in January 1991 and even motivated Nalini to join the LTTE.

He had also aided in a recce carried out before the assassination attempt in which the eventual bombers had attended a rally of the then Prime Minister VP Singh.

Following the successful assassination, Murugan went with wife Nalini to give thanks at the Tirupati temple according to investigators.

He was convicted on the basis of his confessional statement which a court observed showed his role as one of the key conspirators.

AG Perarivalan

A 20-year-old at the time, Perarivalan, is the son of a Tamil poet and had been a part of the LTTE from 1989.

He was involved in the sale of LTTE literature and even met LTTE chief Veluppillai Prabhakaran and other leaders of LTTE when he went to Sri Lanka. He was accused of aiding the movement of LTTE cadres into India and even preparing a sketch of the Vellore fort to free prisoners of the terror group.

Perarivalan was also allegedly involved in getting equipment for the bomb used to kill Rajiv Gandhi and also carrying out a reece of VP Singh’s rally to assess security arrangements. Robert Pious:: A Sri Lankan Tamil, he is alleged to have landed with his wife and others as part of a batch of LTTE commandos in September 1990.

Pious had claimed his child had died due to atrocities perpetrated by the IPKF sent to Sri Lanka due to which he wanted to seek revenge. Pious, in his confession statement, has admitted to being part of the key planners for the assassination and was convicted for his role in the conspiracy.

Bilavendran, Simon, Gnanprakasam and Madiah

All four people are aides of Veerappan, convicted for a landmine blast in 1993.

The four were awarded life sentences by the TADA court in Mysore after they were found guilty of involvement in the Palar blast case in which 22 people — mainly policemen — were killed in a landmine explosion triggered by Veerappan in April 1993.

A few organisations and activists appealed in the Supreme Court against the life sentence. The apex court, however, enhanced the sentence to death. Their mercy petitions had been rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The others who benefitted from the ruling are:

Sonia and Sanjeev Choudhary (murder of eight relatives),
Gurmeet Singh (murder of 13 relatives),
Shivu and Jadeswamy (rape and murder of a woman),
Suresh and Ramji (murder of five relatives),
Jafar Ali (murder of wife and five daughters),
Praveen Kumar (murder of four people), Sunder Singh (murder of five relatives)
Maganlal Barela (murder of five daughters).

Modi will get US visa, diplomatic immunity if he becomes PM: report

The US has already reached out with its ambassador meeting Modi last year. AP

Washington: The nine-year US visa ban on Narendra Modi will automatically be lifted and he would enjoy diplomatic immunity if he becomes the prime minister, a Congressional report said today.

“Modi is widely considered to be one of the front-runners as prime ministerial candidate of his Bharatiya Janata Party. If Narendra Modi were to become Prime Minister of India, he would automatically be eligible for an A-1 (diplomatic) visa as head of state, regardless of the purpose of his visit,” the Congressional Research Service (CRS) said in its communication
to US lawmakers.

In 2005, the US had denied visa to Modi in the wake of the 2002 Gujarat riots and has since not revoked its decision. The seven-page report ‘Visa Policy: the case of Narendra Modi’ was prepared by the CRS – an independent and bipartisan wing of the US Congress – at the request of several lawmakers, most who have been opposed to a US visa to Modi.

The US has already reached out with its ambassador meeting Modi last year. AP

The views and reports of the CRS are meant to keep the lawmakers informed and is non-binding either on the Congress or the US Government.

Led Congressmen Republican Joe Pitts and Democrat Keith Ellison lawmaker had asked a set of five questions on the prospects of US granting a visa to Modi if he is elected as the Prime Minister of India.

The lawmakers had asked ‘What is the process for approval of a US visa if Modi were to apply for one?’ and ‘Were Modi elected Prime Minister of India, how would his ascension likely affect his prospects to receive a US visa? Would the US be required to grant him a diplomatic visa? How might the International Religious Freedom Act be interpreted should he
apply for a visa?’

The report dated 18 March was made public on 31 March.

It also refers to the recent cases in which Modi was given a clean chit by the courts and investigative agencies. In December 2010, a Special Investigative Team appointed by the Supreme Court of India had found “no substantial incriminating evidence” that Chief Minister Modi had let the rioters rampage against the Muslims in February 2002, it said.

“On the other hand, the Gujarat High Court continues to criticize Chief Minister Modi for his ‘inaction and negligence’ during the violence,” the report said.

The report said Modi as the Prime Minister would enjoy diplomatic immunity.

However, it is only US President Barack Obama who can exercise his authority to deny a visa to Modi as the Prime Minister of India if he deems that would be detrimental to the American interest.

In August 2011, Obama had issued a proclamation in this regard pertaining to foreign nationals involved in war crime or systematic violence systematic against civilian populations.

Where The Bathroom Is In This Church Is So Disturbing. It Can’t Possibly Be Good.

Most churches are very old buildings, and because of that, sometimes those structures can be a little on the creepy side (especially the basements, choir lofts and organ rooms). But even at that, you probably have never seen something THIS strange inside a place of worship. While visiting a church, a Reddit user needed to use the restroom. They were instructed to go into a small sacristy.

Once there, they found something they sincerely did not expect.

The bright side of having such a creepy bathroom? Very few parishioners get up and leave services to go use the restroom. It could be worse, though. At least there are lights you can turn on down there. (Although it’s very hard to be certain that bathroom isn’t haunted.)

UN chief urges peaceful, credible census in Myanmar

United Nations, April 1 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged a peaceful and credible national census in Myanmar after the attack on UN and other aid group offices there last week, UN spokesperson’s office said Monday.

The UN chief asked the Myanmar government “to uphold its obligations toward the safety and security of all staff members and ensure protection of property in accordance with relevant agreements” over a telephone call with Myanmar President U Thein Sein Sunday, Xinhua reported.

He also stressed that impunity cannot be tolerated in the context of Myanmar’s reform process and called for the protection of all civilians and the full respect for the rule of law.

In Sittway, Rakhine state of western Myanmar, a number of offices of international aid groups, including those of UN agencies, were stoned and attacked by hundreds of unidentified local ethnic Rakhine demonstrators Wednesday and Thursday, said Myanmar media reports.

Myanmar’s national census, the first in three decades, started Sunday to collect data for current population, economic and social facts and figures. The 12-day National Population and Housing Census, aimed at working out national development plan, will last until April 10.

Methane-spewing microbe blamed in Earth’s worst mass extinction

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Sometimes bad things come in small packages.

A microbe that spewed humongous amounts of methane into Earth’s atmosphere triggered a global catastrophe 252 million years ago that wiped out upwards of 90 percent of marine species and 70 percent of land vertebrates.

That’s the hypothesis offered on Monday by researchers aiming to solve one of science’s enduring mysteries: what happened at the end of the Permian period to cause the worst of the five mass extinctions in Earth’s history.

The scale of this calamity made the one that doomed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago – a six-mile (10 km) wide asteroid smacking the planet – seem like a picnic by comparison.

The implicated microbe, Methanosarcina, is a member of a kingdom of single-celled organisms distinct from bacteria called archaea that lack a nucleus and other usual cell structures.

“I would say that the end-Permian extinction is the closest animal life has ever come to being totally wiped out, and it may have come pretty close,” said Massachusetts Institute of Technology biologist Greg Fournier, one of the researchers.

“Many, if not most, of the surviving groups of organisms barely hung on, with only a few species making it through, many probably by chance,” Fournier added.

Previous ideas proposed for the Permian extinction include an asteroid and large-scale volcanism. But these researchers suggest a microscope would be needed to find the actual culprit.

Methanosarcina grew in a frenzy in the seas, disgorging huge quantities of methane into Earth’s atmosphere, they said.

This dramatically heated up the climate and fundamentally altered the chemistry of the oceans by driving up acid levels, causing unlivable conditions for many species, they added.

The horseshoe crab-like trilobites and the sea scorpions – denizens of the seas for hundreds of millions of years – simply vanished. Other marine groups barely avoided oblivion including common creatures called ammonites with tentacles and a shell.

On land, most of the dominant mammal-like reptiles died, with the exception of a handful of lineages including the ones that were the ancestors of modern mammals including people.

‘RADICALLY CHANGED’

“Land vertebrates took as long as 30 million years to reach the same levels of biodiversity as before the extinction, and afterwards life in the oceans and on land was radically changed, dominated by very different groups of animals,” Fournier said.

The first dinosaurs appeared 20 million years after the Permian mass extinction.

“One important point is that the natural environment is sensitive to the evolution of microbial life,” said Daniel Rothman, an MIT geophysics professor who led the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The best example of that, Rothman said, was the advent about 2.5 billion years ago of bacteria engaging in photosynthesis, which paved the way for the later appearance of animals by belching fantastic amounts of oxygen into Earth’s atmosphere.

Methanosarcina is still found today in places like oil wells, trash dumps and the guts of animals like cows.

It already existed before the Permian crisis. But genetic evidence indicates it acquired a unique new quality at that time through a process known as “gene transfer” from another microbe, the researchers said.

It suddenly became a major producer of methane through the consumption of accumulated organic carbon in ocean sediments.

The microbe would have been unable to proliferate so wildly without proper mineral nutrients. The researchers found that cataclysmic volcanic eruptions that occurred at that time in Siberia drove up ocean concentrations of nickel, a metallic element that just happens to facilitate this microbe’s growth.

Fournier called volcanism a catalyst instead of a cause of mass extinction – “the detonator rather than the bomb itself.”

“As small as an individual microorganism is, their sheer abundance and ubiquity make for a huge cumulative impact. On a geochemical level, they really do run the planet,” he said.

The Permian mass extinction unfolded during tens of thousands of years and was not the sudden die-off that an asteroid impact might cause, the researchers said.

The most famous of Earth’s mass extinctions occurred 65 million years ago when an asteroid impact wiped out the dinosaurs that ruled the land and many marine species. There also were huge die-offs 440 million years ago, 365 million years ago and 200 million years ago.
